The world knows older cultures than those that have left their mark on the European continent, including Slovakia. We can discuss at length the importance of different cultures in the development of civilization – in this context Europe should not be omitted, as it is undisputable that the “old continent” has had a marked influence on the development of humanity. Today, Europe’s influence can still be felt. Its unique historical development has predestined it to continue its role as a historical and cultural force in today’s world. The tangible historical treasures found throughout Europe are sought after by millions of tourists. Slovakia included, has a lot to offer to visitors in terms of its historic cities, sites, and natural preserves included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List; be it Banská Štiavnica, Vlkolínec, Spišské Podhradie, or Bardejov. The recognition of these sites testifies to Slovakia’s importance as one of the important founders of European civilization. Uniqueness in the
Heart of Europe
Together with other historic objects found throughout Europe, the sites scattered throughout the territory of modern Slovakia are a testament to the strength of Europe’s traditions and the historic legacy that has, and continues to be, the driving force for the advancement of humanity as a whole. The inclusion of historic Slovak sites on the list of world cultural heritage sites – even prior to the country’s official membership in the European Union and other international organizations – was of undisputable importance since the designated sites have become a waypoint in assisting potential visitors to locate this small country in the heart of Europe. These sites serve as gateways for discovering the country’s natural beauty and architectural treasures. Slovakia is a diverse country where one can find many different ethnic groups, religious affiliations, and nationalities. All these factors have left an indelible mark on the aforementioned sites. Thanks to UNESCO’s recognition, they continue to attract visitors who desire to further investigate these cultural treasures. Cultural sites are in-and-of themselves valuable sources of knowledge of eras past, and serve as a testament to the creative genius of countless generations who lived in, and shaped the region. Moreover, they are a source of inspiration, reflecting the unique qualities of the region. Like a cultural imprint of the nation’s collective memory, they encapsulate the spirit of humanity. They both enrich us and remind us to stay true to ourselves.
